Now Dems want ‘God’ removed from House hearings

It was only a few years ago that the Democratic Party sustained a hugely embarrassing moment at a national convention when members angrily voiced opposition to a reference to God in the party platform.

Delegates in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2012 booed, jeered and shook their fists as Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa declared, after calling for a voice vote three times, that a mention of God had been restored to the platform.

Now, the party has proposed rules for the new Congress that eliminate the phrase “so help you God” from the oath witnesses take when they testify before the House.

Fox News reported it’s among the changes being made by Democrats since taking over the majority.

The report said a draft of the changes shows witnesses would be asked, “Do you solemnly swear or affirm, under penalty of law, that the testimony that you are about to give is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?”

The words “so help you God” are in the proposal, but in red and bracketed, meaning they are to be dropped. The words “under penalty of law” are in red, indicating that Democrats propose to add that phrasing to the oath, the report said.

“The draft rules also remove the phrase ‘his or her’ throughout the document, changing those two pronouns to ‘their.’ The rules additionally modify all references to the committee’s ‘Chairman’ to instead refer only to the committee’s ‘Chair,’” the report said.
